Hôm qua xem Cinema Paradiso. Hoá ra version DVD mà mình có lại là version Director's Cut, ngày trước là xem bản Original Cut. Bản Director's Cut dài hơn bản release ngày trước tới gần 1 tiếng, và thêm nhiều chi tiết làm rõ hẳn câu chuyện nhưng cũng làm thay đổi khá nhiều ý nghĩa của phim. Tôi thích bản original hơn, vì sức gợi và tính chủ đề của nó tốt hơn.
Nếu như bản Original là câu chuyện về tình yêu của một cậu bé với điện ảnh, và tình bạn của cậu với người chiếu phim thì bản Director's Cut lại thiên về câu chuyện tình yêu của Toto với cô bạn gái, với những chi tiết thừa thãi và biến câu chuyện thành bình thường, logic và hợp lý nhưng không gây được hiệu quả cảm xúc bằng bản original. Nhưng có lẽ cách kết thúc như vậy lại hợp với cảm xúc của người Ý, gần giống một đoạn ở phần đầu phim khi cả rạp chiếu phim ai nấy nước mắt chảy ròng ròng khi xem cảnh re-union của các nhân vật trong một bộ phim nào đó. Bản Director's Cut cũng làm cho hình ảnh của Alfredo trở nên tầm thường hơn.
Xem phim này đôi lúc lại nhớ tới tới ngày xưa, thời bao cấp và mới Đổi mới, hồi còn đi xem chiếu bóng ở ngoài bãi cỏ, hay thỉnh thoảng được xem phim chiêu đãi chiếu ở các hội trường nhân dịp gì đó.

Alfredo tells a story to Toto: Once upon a time, a king gave a feast. And there came the most beautiful princesses of the realm. Now, a soldier, who was standing guard, saw the king's daughter go by. She was the most beautiful one, and he immediately fell in love with her. But what could a poor soldier do when it came to the daughter of the king? Well, finally, one day, he managed to meet her, and he told her that he could no longer live without her. The princess was so impressed by his strong feelings that she said to the soldier: "If you can wait 100 days and 100 nights under my balcony, then at the end of it, I shall be yours." Damn! The soldier immediately went there and waited one day. And two days. And ten. And then twenty. And every evening, the princess looked out of her window, but he never moved. During rain, during wind, during snow, he was always there. The bird shat on his head, and the bees stung him, but he didn't budge. After ninety nights, he had become all dried up, all white, and the tears streamed from his eyes. He couldn't hold them back. He no longer had the strength to sleep. All that time, the princess watched him. And on the 99th night, the soldier stood up, took his chair, and went away.
My interpretation: He isn't in love with her actually, and neither is she, of course (as explained by Linh). Maybe in the first days, he was so much in love with her, and so weak in himself. Love was more like the salvage for him. As time passed, he grew stronger (mentally) by himself. Untill the day he found out that everything so far was just illusion, he's got his inner strength and mindfulness, but he lost his love, no, he never loved her, love was only a challenge and reward for both of them. Then he went away, probably telling himself "Now I can wait for another 100 days not just one day left, but what is it for? I don't love her and this is not the way to love and be loved!"

"In one more night, the princess would have been his. But she also could not possibly have kept her promise. And it would have been terrible. He would have died. This way, however, at least for 99 days, he was living under the illusion that she was there, waiting for him"
So, it's one interpretation: Maybe living under the illusion of love and hope is better than living with truth and disapointment. "Tình chỉ đẹp khi tình còn dang dở" :D
This reminds me of a quote from the Lord of War that I have just seen last week
"Yuri Orlov: "The problem with dating dream girls is that they have a tendency to become real"
But when hearing this story, my immediate interpretation is different. My interpretation is that the soldier feels the princess doesn't love him. If she can watch him waiting and suffering for 99 days, there is no reason that she suddenly loves him after one more day. After one more day, she has to choose between commitment without love or outright betrayal. And either is not what the soldier wants. His waiting is to show his love. But the girl does nothing to show her love. The soldier wanted love, not a reward for love. So he picked up his chair and went away.
In the movie, Toto also waited for the girl day by day before her window. Just when he decided to end his hope, the girl appeared in the projectionist room and they became lovers.

one-way love chua han la illusion. No chi la different kind of love thoi. Voi lai cung kho phan biet cai nao la illusion, cai nao khong phai. Khi van dang bi love spell thi thay no la true love, real love, the only love... nhung khi het roi thi co the lai chi xem do la illusion.
ReplyDeleteNhu trong cau chuyen tren thi co the la ca hai deu dang o trong illusion. For the guy, it's the illusion of love. For the girl, it's the illusion of being loved. But perhaps they're both happy under their illusions, at least until they know them.
One more lesson for both guys and girls: You need to be happy at the moment, no matter what you think about that moment afterward
