Entry for September 28, 2006

Very good films that I've seen and like recently (in about 2 weeks).

1. Gandhi. Great epic, can be compared to Dr Zhivago or Lawrence of Arabia. Very subtle portray of a great man by a great actor.

2. 3-Iron . The Kim Ki-duk thing, you know, beautiful, delicate and a little philosophical/mystic. But this film is nicer and not so haunted like some of his other films (The Island, Samanta and even Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring).

3. Garden State. Very nice movie. It reminds me of The Graduate and a bit of Eternal Sunshine. Great sountrack too (I downloaded and am listening to it right now). And I officially announce that I'm a fan of Natalie Portman- this is Day One. She is a rare talent among the so-many-young-and-hot actresses that it's hard to remember their names/faces now.

4. Cat in the Hot Tin Roof. Nice drama. I'm quite attracted to movies made from drama (like Closer, for instance) because they are so tense and portrays the relationship and the human minds mercilessly. And  this one is the adaptation of a main work by a great playwright- Tennesse Williams (admittedly, this is the first thing from him that I've seen).

5. Burnt by the Sun: post-Soviet movie, awarded Oscar for Best Foreign Movie some years ago. Very honest work about one darkest period in Russia before- the age of Stalin's Terrorist State. Yet, I find the movie very Russian and quite lovely indeed.

6. The Chorus. Phim Pháp, nội dung hơi cũ, sentimental kiểu Holywood chứ không phức tạp hay pseudo-intellectual như đa số phim Pháp khác, nhưng nói chung là nice, câu chuyện nhẹ nhàng và có tính thực tế chứ không lên gân như ở nhiều phim Holywood. Âm nhạc thì rất hay, nghe trong phim rất cảm động, cậu diễn viên chính trông rất cute, mắt đẹp, còn một cậu diễn viên nhí nữa trông cũng dễ thương cực kỳ.

On the list of being seen this weekend: Bad Education (though I have a little prejudice because of transexual thing?), The Hour (some more prejudice for the lesbian thing?) and The Sound of Music (saw it long long ago, don't know if it's good or bad but I heard that's a great musical and I like some songs in its soundtrack very much).

Update: Đã xem Bad Education. Quả là một phim đặc biệt, twist, dark và original. Nhưng cũng không dám coi phim này là một favorite vì có quá nhiều thứ gay, trần trụi và dark quá. Đọc ở đâu thấy có nói phim này có thể chịu ảnh hưởng từ Vertigo của Hitchcok, kể cũng đúng, cũng các themes đó: passion, jealousy, obsession, identity, cũng nhiều tầng ý nghĩa, cũng những cái twist rất bất ngờ và bao hàm nhiều genres phim (thriller, noir, romance) nhưng theo một phong cách Tây Ban Nha rất sensual và direct (khác với tính biểu tượng và siêu thực trong Vertigo của Hitchcok). Phim của Almodovar cũng u tối, bi quan và không khoan nhượng với người xem so với phim của Hitchcok. Có thể coi là một trong số ít phim độc đáo và có tính sáng tạo nhất trong vòng vài năm gần đây (cùng với the Matrix, Adaptation và vài phim khác).
